Textiles aside (almost) the collective ‘We Make Carpets’ is made up of 3 designers: Marcia Nolte, Stijn van der Vleuten and Bob Waardenburg who have created this incredible rug made entirely from pastel coloured plastic forks. ‘Fork Carpet’ was originally made for the Dutch design week in 2010. Like embroidery, weaving carpets is centuries old. It traditionally was associated with wealth and power and usually the functionality was second place. We Make Carpets have subverted this notion by producing elaborately design rugs with everyday and cheap materials. From a far the rug looks intricately woven but it is only until the viewer inspects it closer they realise the labour intensive act of positioning each plastic fork to form this piece and the magic and surprise that it is made from such a banal object.
They have some other amazing rugs (favourites being the paperclip, band-aid and pasta rugs) Check out their website for more of their work.
